What’s in a name?
In this neighborhood, Chattanooga’s industrial history isn’t just celebrated…
it’s inspiring a new generation of community.
Built in 1916, the Standard-Coosa-Thatcher textile mill employed tens of thousands of Chattanoogans, many of whom lived in the nearby Watkins Street neighborhood. Workers in the mill sorted, processed, and spun cotton into various textiles, including poplin, that would go on to be exported worldwide. To these hard-working Chattanoogans, the mill was always more than just somewhere that manufactured cotton — it was the center of a thriving middle-class community.
De-industrialization hit our city hard in the 20th century. By 2003, the mill was abandoned. Fortunately, nothing is more Chattanoogan than renewal.
After two decades, the mill and the area around it — known today as Mill Town — have been restored to their rightful place in the heart of a thriving community in Chattanooga’s chic southside. Instead of spinning cotton, people come to Mill Town today to be entertained, enjoy a meal, work at a great job, and live in a beautiful home conveniently located in the center of Hamilton County. Homes in Mill Town are intentionally built to meet many different price points to ensure everyone can afford to live where they want.
The Poplin stands at the Main Street Entrance to Mill Town, proudly reminding visitors and residents alike of the legacy of this neighborhood.
